BBB: Scammers use texts to target seniors during COVID-19 pandemic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Local law enforcement agencies are again reminding residents that they will not call and demand money.

The most recent reminders are from the Charlottesville Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

CPD reports scammers have been calling residents and impersonating officers, saying the victim owes some form of civil debt.

In Madison County, someone claiming to be a deputy has been calling people and telling them there is a warrant out for their arrest and they need to send money to avoid being arrested.

Both of these instances are scams.

Law enforcement agencies say they will not call residents and demand money over the phone. Nor will they request personal identification information.

To make matters worse, scammers are often spoofing their phone numbers so that it looks like the call is coming from an official line.

Anyone who receives such a call should take down information regarding the caller and their number and then report that directly to their local law enforcement agency.
