CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) – Sen. Mark Warner talked exclusively to CBS19 from the Democratic National Convention Tuesday, saying he sees success for Kamala Harris in Virginia.
Current polling shows Harris three points ahead of Donald Trump in Virginia.
“Donald Trump lost in 2016 by five points, by 10 points in 2020 in Virginia. I think as Virginians and Americans come to know Vice President Harris even more, I'd like to see us to even exceed the margin of what happened in 2020,” Warner said.
Warner says introducing the ticket of Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz at the DNC should boost polling numbers.
“This is someone who does her homework, comes prepared, asks tough questions, and doesn't suffer fools very well,” Warner said, “So it'll be interesting to see. I think the whole country should tune into the night that she and Donald Trump talk about their competing visions for the country.”
He said those visions, and the theme of the DNC, are about freedom.
“Freedom to not have your government interfere, and women's reproductive health choices, freedom to actually have the kind of books you want to read available to appropriate ages for kids in school. Freedom in this country to make sure that we stand up against oppression,” he said.
Warner said Sen. Tim Kaine's reelection bid will likely help Harris in Virginia.
“I think [Kaine] will lead the whole ticket that will also help us in terms of some of the competitive congressional races. But I think Kamala is going to do very, very well in Virginia,” Warner said.
