CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- After months of not receiving their mail on time, constituents continue to complain to Senator Tim Kaine and other lawmakers from Virginia. But Kaine says some progress has been made after he met and reviewed data with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy recently.
Kaine says delays increased after the postal service established a distribution center in Richmond.
DeJoy has admitted that the rollout was a "disaster."
During the meeting, Kaine was presented with statistics showing an improvement in on-time deliveries from the first quarter of the year to the second.
But, he pointed out that Virginia still ranks as the third state from the bottom when compared to the rest of the country.
Kaine hopes the data he saw is sustainable.
"So, we are seeing improvements that are ongoing and we are also seeing fewer constituent complaints and that suggests some progress has being made, but it’s not enough," he says. "The Postmaster said that he thinks these are sustainable, that we aren't likely to go backward, but he still believes there's more on the positive that we can do."
Seventh District Representative Abigail Spanberger was also at the meeting. She agrees with Kaine and says they continue to press for increased transparency, greater engagement with the public, and a higher standard of service for communities across Virginia.
