CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- "I think it's important for me to not be a one-trick pony," Monticello utility player Sammi Deitsch said.
Every coach's dream is to have a player that's hard to take off the field and for the Monticello softball team that is Sammi Deitsch. She is not only an infielder. She is a force behind the plate and she can shag some fly balls as well.
"If I think a certain position fits me best in a certain situation, I can have input -- I can have the ability to play that position," Deitsch said.
"She just has a tremendous game sense and does well in all faucets of the game. She just knows the game inside and out," Monticello softball coach Heidi Freitager said.
A lot of that comes from playing with the older kids for her travel team, Virginia Legends.
"For me, I always told myself that I'm very young," Deitsch said. "Like 15 years old. I'm very young and playing with literal adults who are going to play Division I softball, but you just keep your head up."
And by doing just that and showcasing her versatility, she has earned her own opportunities to continue her career at Virginia Wesleyan next year.
"To be able to not only go to the next level and play some college ball, but to be able to do it at a Division III national championship contender year-in year-out under Coach Brandon Elliott couldn't have been a better fit," Freitager said.
"They just had everything I loved there," Deitsch said. "Met the girls and they are absolute sweethearts. The coaches are very energetic and I just know they are going to push me to be my best."
Deitsch and the Monticello softball team begin their season next Thursday at Eastern View.
