WASHINGTON (CBS19 NEWS) -- Boar’s Head Provisions Co. is recalling thousands of pounds of deli meat products that may be contaminated with Listeria.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the main product being recalled is liverwurst that was produced at a facility in Jarratt, Virginia.

However, Boar’s Head is also recalling other deli meats that were produced on the same line and on the same day as the liverwurst.

The USDA reports these products were distributed to retail deli locations across the country with establishment number “EST. 12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the product labels.

The problem was discovered when the USDA was notified by the Maryland Department of Health about a sample that tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

The MDH and the Baltimore City Health Department collected an unopened liverwurst product for testing as part of a Listeria outbreak investigation.

Further testing is ongoing to determine is the product samples are related to the outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was called upon to investigate a multistate Listeria outbreak associated with meats sliced at delis.

As of July 25, 34 people in 13 states have been sickened. Of those people 33 were hospitalized and two deaths have been reported.

Listeria infection can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

In people who are pregnant, it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infections in newborns.

Products under this recall should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

Consumers should also clean refrigerators thoroughly to prevent any potential cross-contamination.
