ACPS finalizes expansion of school walking zones

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Nearly 100 tickets have been doled out for people speeding through Albemarle County school zones in just a week.

The Albemarle County Police Department says officers have been out in full force to keep school zones safe now that students are back in class.

During the first week of school, officers issued 156 total tickets, of which 96 were for speeding in a school zone.

Among those 96 speeding tickets, ACPD says eight were given to drivers who were going at least 20 miles per hour over the speed limit.

Another 14 drivers were ticketed for being on their phones and 13 were caught driving without a valid license.

The rest of the tickets issued went to people who had expired inspections or registrations and seat belt violations.

As part of an effort to improve school zone safety near Albemarle High School, ACPD just launched speed cameras on Hydraulic Road. The cameras became active on Tuesday.
