ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- It’s a new relationship between the Albemarle County police and Sheriff departments after a challenging summer. In August, the Sheriff’s Office ended the previous Memorandum of Understanding defining each department’s role in working together.
"Because that MOU was terminated, it provided us an opportunity to come together, our two departments and craft a new MOU that better reflects the services that we provide our community," said Colonel Sean Reeves, Chief of the Albemarle County Police Department.
Several key provisions in the new agreement include:
- ACPD will manage temporary detention orders, post-conviction fingerprinting, and evidence storage.
- The Sheriff’s Office will handle prisoner extraditions, data entries for court-generated documents, and courtroom warrant services.
"I think it’s important for the community to recognize that the Albemarle County Police Department has several partnerships with our federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. It’s equally important that we enter this MOU to demonstrate to our community that the Police Department and Sheriff’s Department are operating on the same sheet of music," said Reeves.
The new MOU between ACPD and ACSO will last until June 2025 and renew automatically each year unless either party gives written notice to end it.
"Right now the benchmark for performance comes down to constant communication between our two jurisdictions. It’s a constant evaluation process of what’s working and what’s not, so we have plenty of time to readjust and, more importantly, budget for it during the county’s budget cycle," said Reeves.
