Florida law enforcement officials will launch their own criminal investigation into the apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump that will run parallel to the federal probe. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis made the announcement Tuesday. The governor said Florida prosecutors will pursue the most serious charges available under state law, including attempted murder, in the state-level investigation into Ryan Wesley Routh. The suspect was charged Monday with federal firearms offenses. The White House said Vice President Kamala Harris spoke Tuesday with Trump to express how grateful she is that he is safe.

The FBI says former President Donald was the target of what appeared to be “an attempted assassination” at his West Palm Beach golf club in Florida. U.S. Secret Service agents opened fire Sunday after seeing a man with a firearm while the Republican presidential candidate was golfing. Officials say the man was apprehended after fleeing in an SUV. The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, was charged Monday with federal gun crimes. Additional and more serious charges are possible as the investigation continues and prosecutors seek an indictment from a grand jury.

Former President Donald Trump is blaming rhetoric from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the apparent assassination attempt on him in Florida despite his own history of going after rivals. This year’s presidential campaign was among the most turbulent in American history even before Sunday’s apparent assassination attempt. Trump was safe after the incident in Florida and praised the Secret Service for protecting him, but didn’t shy away from quickly blaming his opponents. By contrast, Biden steered clear of politics. He said Monday that “thank God" Trump is OK and said the Secret Service “needs more help."

A senior FBI official says the gunman in the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump searched online for events of both Trump and President Joe Biden and saw the Pennsylvania campaign rally where he opened fire last month as a "target of opportunity." Kevin Rojek is the FBI's top agent in Pittsburgh. He said Wednesday that Thomas Matthew Crooks, who shot at Trump before being killed by the Secret Service at the July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, did extensive research for an attack before the shooting and had looked at any number of events or targets. FBI officials say they had yet to uncover a motive despite conducting nearly 1,000 interviews in their investigation.

Donald Trump is holding his first outdoor rally since narrowly surviving an attempted assassination last month. Trump’s podium at the North Carolina Aviation Museum & Hall of Fame is surrounded by panes of bulletproof glass that form a protective wall across the stage. Storage containers have also been stacked around the perimeter of the space to create additional walls and block sight lines at the venue, where old aircraft have been positioned behind the podium and a large American flag is suspended from cranes. He is set to deliver remarks on national security Wednesday afternoon as part of his counterprogramming efforts during the Democratic National Convention.
